Details
Itinerary: You will be picked up from your defined pick up location by your driver. The journey to El Peñón takes approximately 90 minutes. You will have a chance to ascend the rock’s 740 steps. After El Peñón you will continue to the colourful town of Guatapé. Afterwards you will be taken back to your start point.
Duration: This tour lasts approximately 10 hours.
Start time: All listed options are feasible.
Guide: An English speaking guide is included if selected. Drivers will be Spanish speaking.
Meals: Includes bottled water. Meals are not included but there are ample places to find lunch in Guatapé.
Transport: Included.
Entrances: This tour includes entrances to El Peñón.

Remote hotels
Some of our tours do not require transport, some tours have different prices depending on where you book them from.
Hotels sometimes seek to capitalise on their proximity to certain locations by claiming to be in towns and cities when they are not within walking distance. For example, a hotel claiming to be in Salento could be on the Autopista del Café.
Please check a map before booking. If you book a walking tour from a location that requires transport your tour will fail our validation checks. Likewise if you book a tour from one area but your hotel is in a different area.

We booked a range of tours with The Colombian Way over the course of 2 weeks. We contacted Mark and he arranged everything from transfers from the airport to daily tours in each location, a private driver and also some flights. He was very fast in communication and was always available to help out whenever we needed it which was brilliant as the Government were changing what was open at a moments notice. He was also extremely competitive on price being 30% cheaper than another tour operator.
With regard to the Guatape and El Penon full day tour, I knew we were going to see the Lake District but I didn’t realise we were going to climb the stairs of the awesome El Penon rock!
The Colombian Way tour guide arrived on time at our Medellin hotel and his driver took us towards Guatape. Our guide spoke very good English and was fun to be with.
It’s a very picturesque journey to Guatape with nice scenery either side of the road along the way. Look out for the white leafed trees. The road is popular with cyclists and they stop to have their photo taken at the gold cycle statue on the side of the road at the top of the hill. It takes about an hour to get the Guatape and we stopped for breakfast (included in the price) along the way as well as a small tourist village that has a good scenic view and a good place to meander through the souvenir shops.
Then we drove on to the magnificent El Penon. That dramatic lump of a towering rock that seems totally out of place. And then I remembered… yes, that’s the rock I had seen when I booked the tour. That will be a good for a photo I thought. Little did I remember that included in the tour is entrance to the rock to climb the 765 stairs all the way to the top. What an awesome view of the lakes from the top. Also, a great sense of achievement from climbing to the top too. You’ve got to do it!
The next stop itself was the colourful town of Guatape. The murals on the sides of the buildings and the multi-coloured buildings are a visual treat for the senses. They represent the profession of the owner e.g. baker, taxi driver etc. Well worth doing the trip for this alone.
We stopped for a coffee and cake beside the avenue of the coloured umbrellas (great for photos). The lady who owned the coffee shop asked us if we wanted to buy some chocolate covered coffee beans and had these little pouches for sale. When I asked if she had a bigger bag, she scuttled away to another shop and returned with a massive bag of Casa Luker Maracas Dark Chocolate covered Espresso beans. Delicious. These were a very good price and a great snack on the days to follow.
We then wandered down to the waterfront to have a photo by the colourful Guatape 25 metre sign and along the waterfront for more pleasant views before being taken back to our hotel in Medellin.
The tour guide was very interesting and was very flexible in giving us options and taking us to what we selected from these options. A great tour. Highly recommended!
